Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a slightly toxic, odorless, colorless gas with a slightly pungent, acid taste. Exhaled air contains as much as 4% carbon dioxide. CO2 gas is 1.5 times as heavy as air, thus if released to the air it will concentrate at low elevations. Carbon dioxide will form "dry ice" at -78.5ºC (-109.3º F).
Carbon dioxide is the source of the bubbles in soft drinks and other carbonated beverages. It’s also used as a shielding gas in the arc welding process. It’s used to fill certain types of fire extinguishers that rely on its inert properties, density, and low temperature when released from high-pressure storage. In addition to its “inert” properties, carbon dioxide, as dry ice, is used to freeze a variety of foods. |
